Weird Pregnancy Cravings

So at the time of writing, I’m pregnant with my second child.  I’m fortunate in that I dont really have food cravings throughout my prengancies, instead I crave non food items!  I figure it must be a good thing as it helps not to increase the calories!  ;o)

For me it’s sucking cold water out of a sponge.  Yes you read that right!  I always buy a natural sea sponge at the start of the cravings and only use that.  But I will regularly go into the bathroom and indulge.  Call me crazy!  Some women I’ve heard like the chemical smell of the fake sponges.  Some women actaully chew on them or bite them.  I’m not sure what it is about sponges, but if I see anything to do with absorbable cloths, sponges, etc for bathrooms or anywhere I really get an overwhelming urge to indulge in my sponge sucking!  It was the same with my first pregnancy but I didnt think I’d end up with it this time!

It’s actually known as Pica,  (a latin word for ‘Magpie’, as magpies are birds that apparently eat anything!)   Apparently some women crave soil,  paint, cigarette butts to name a few.  Pica is more commonly seen in children apparently, but rarely it is seen in pregnant women.

For now I’m happy with my sponge craving, as soon as the pregnancy is over I know it will go and I’ll wonder what on earth I saw in my sponge!  I’m also mainly eating raw food so nutritionally I’m doing really well!

Would love to hear of some of your more unusual cravings?  Or am I the only one!?

I’m sure you’re not the only one! I used to suck the water out of my washclothe as a child, but never experienced it when pregnant! But Chinese food and I were BEST friends!

Haha CJ!  Chinese foods a favorite of mine at any stage in life!  :)

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who has these strange cravings. It’s somewhat different with me though, as a child, I enjoyed actually EATING sponge… not just ANY sponge either… I particularly went for the sponge they use in mattresses. After a while, I stopped because I was too ashamed that someone would find out (which eventually my mom did when she saw that I ate all the sponge out of my mattress). I was maybe 10 or 11, now I’m 26… for about 16 years I haven’t thought about it but now that I’m pregnant, I have the urge to chew it. The smell of it drives me crazy, and for some reason, it’s ONLY mattress sponge that does this to me. Although I’ve been tempted to, I don’t tear up the mattress… I just buy my own special “Chewing” sponge. I don’t swallow or anything, I just chew a side on the sponge long enough to kick my craving, and put it in a ziploc bag when I’m done. My boyfriend gets a kick out of seeing me do this, of course because it’s something he’s never seen… I’m quite comfy with chewing in front of him now that he knows but I’m very concerned about this becoming a habit AGAIN after my pregnancy. It makes me feel like a crack head having a relapse because it’s something I did in the past.

Normally its a craving for Iron. Make sure you’re getting enough Iron in your diet or supplement with a natural iron supplement, I would recommend floradix which is a good tasting liquid :)
