So what is conscious parenting?
For me conscious parenting is all about the desire to raise your child in the most conscious, gentle way. To parent the way we wanted to be parented and not the way we were parented. Allowing your children to be who they are, to respect them as you would anyone else, and allowing them to discover for themselves while you are all the while on hand to coach them when necessary. Also, most importantly as they get older, it’s wanting what they want for themselves, not what we want for them.
Conscious parenting and attachment parenting can involve extended breastfeeding, feeding on demand, babywearing, baby led weaning, elimination communication, home schooling, or unschooling, the list goes on.
Conscious parenting is flexible in its approach depending on the abilities and personality of the child. I dont think you can have a one size fits all approach to any kind of parenting, although some of the baby training books on the market today would have you think otherwise. The “cry it out” method thats become popular in western culture, is just a way to fit our babies needs around our own, rather than the other way around. When we have children, we have to expect that our lives are going to be extrememly disrupted for the first year or two, and then other challenges come.
So often in our culture, we push our children to be ‘the best’ they can be, to do the things we didn’t, to fill needs rooted in our own subconscious. All to often we fall into patterns of our own upbringing, saying things our own mothers or fathers would have said, that we swore we never would.
Being a conscious parent makes it necessary for us to challenge our own patterns, choices, behaviours and beliefs in relation to life and not just our roles as parents. We are their main role models, and things that ordinarily we may have done without a thought, are a whole other story once we have children.
We all want our children to grow up happy, healthy and secure in themselves. Conscious parenting is a sure fire way to succeed.
